my 98' mariner 90hp wont start by the key switch ,but will start with a direct solenoid jump. i replaced the key switch and the solenoid but still have the same problem, can anyone help???
There are a whole series of tests in the manual for problems like these.I would start with a continunity test between the red and yellow/red on the wiring harness. Either the external or internal wiring harnesses could have a short.Stupid question: are you sure that it is in neutral. Make sure the wires from the throttle/Shift box to the external wiring harness are loose or become disloged, if they have your motor won't "know" that it is or isn't in neutral.
You are more than likely looking for an "open" not a "short". If the start circuit was shorted it would make smoke or blow a fuse. Disconnect inspect, clean and reconnect the main harness connector at the engine. Make sure the neutral start switch is functioning as Andy suggested.
I have a 92 90HP merc. that has starting problems and was told it was the stator . They want 350 to fix it so I am going to attempt to fix it myself, any hints.

Try checking the neutral safety switch 1st, it prohibits start +12 signal if the thing is not in neutral.-W

Ya, ohm out the stator as per the manual to make sure it's bad, and get a flywheel puller if it is. And contact a good aftermarket parts source for the stator.-W
