Cut the drive shaft in half to drop the gear box. Started removing the water pump and am now looking at the plastic block with 3 stainless studs. What can I expect to find to remove the shaft from the gearbox? Seal and pressed on bearing? Do have a SELOCK manual but it covers so many different set up as to be confusing. Dont want to start prying on things and cause more damage than is already done. 92, 40 hp. mariner 4 cyl. thanks fred

OK, the plastic piece i was looking at finally came out. Has O ring and oil seal. Now I am looking at what appears to be a tapered roller bearing. Anybody have experience removing this bearing? Appears to be what is holding the shaft in. Any help appreciated. fred

Fred, if it helps I still have the genuine service manual for the 1991 Mariner Magnum 40hp 4cyl. I can scan and send the relevant pages by email if you wanted?
Re: removing drive shaft from gear box, 40 mariner
Hi guys! Thanks for your response and offers. Have officially wrote the thing off today. Without the correct spanner wrenches and pullers I am damaging things just to get it apart. Hate to think what new parts would cost. Am spending the rest of the day trying to remove the shaft from the power head without causing damage. Ran like a clock, hope someone can use it. Will work on it today, then get battened down for this next storm. regards fred

RODBOLT, this may work! Will work on the power head today. Concidence, our friends wife in COLLINGTON is coming down in a week or so to take a position down here. He is staying there for awhile to break in his new 200 yamaha. He works at pirates cove. Think that old man would do it for free. Will stay in touch. regards fred
