Default removing power head 4 cyl mariner

Finally got a chance to take the motor out for a run today. It is a 92 or 93 40 horse 4 cyl mariner. Ran smoothe at all power settings. One problem came up that I did not find with it on muffs. Big time exhaust/ water leak between the power head and leg. Bought a SELOC manual, which i guess is a good book, but it covers every damn 2 stroke mercury made. Have to pull the power head and cant figure out how many bolts hold it on. Found 4 studs aft 2 on each side with nuts that came off surprisingly easy. Looks like there is a long thru bolt forward that has to come out. That makes 6. Do not want to miss something and think the head is seized to the shaft. Looking for guidance on the total nbr. of studs and bolts.

Had mine off this spring. Remove the lower cowling to reveal the fasteners. Can't remember for certain but I thought there were 8. Four on each side. The two front nuts could not be completely removed until the powerhead was raised slightly because of the stud length.

Yep, it has 8. Power head is seized to the shaft. Big fix there according to the book is drill a hole in the leg and cut it with a torch. Fix in my book is I put it back together and will run it with the exhaust leak. Runs to good to just forget it but not worth getting any deeper. regards fred

You sure the leak isn't in the exhaust plate? (port side). That's where they usually spring a leak. You can probably change the exhaust gaskets without pulling the powerhead.Eric

No, wish it were. Exhaust and water mist spray from under the cowl into the boat. Removed the exhaust plate on an older 50 yamaha a few years back during a rebuild, wont do that again. Snapped 12 of the 14 bolts that held the cover on. Age and saltwater isn,t kind to engines around here. People here scoop up on fresh water motors brought down by the snowbireds regards fred
