the engine starts fine, that is not the problem. when i go to turn off the motor, the motor turns off but the starter keeps on spinning. the only way to stop the starter is disconnecting the battery. i think that it is the ignition switch?

That would be one guess. I would also guess that the starter solenoid could be bad. Wait and see what the others (people that know what they are doing) say.

you could check the ignition by unhooking the starter and checking igniotionwires for voltage in off position
