Can anybody tell me the thread & pitch on the outer circumference of the Mercury flywheel puller,is it BA,whitworth,????????????. My 50hp 4 cylinder Merc just wont start i think its a 1985 Belgium made.I've by-passed the kill switch,dis-connected the regulator i get no spark ?? I want to check the stator and (as you Americans say the trigger)there aren't any voltages on the right side of the power pack. your help is appreciatedi can't let a machine win

Chelquay, The Stator and trigger are 2 different animals. The stator supply the current, (alternator). The Trigger creates the pulses for the firing of the coils. The trigger is like an electronic distributor.I removed mine using a harmonic balancer puller for a car. I used the 3 bolts of the puller in 3 of the flywheel plate cover bolt holes. Be careful not to screw them in too far, as these holes are bottomless. If you go too far you will damage the trigger pick up magnet that is bolted underneath

The magnets for the trigger are located on the center hub of the flywheel (the hub that is sits atop the crankshaft)?-andy

AHH I understand alternator and distributor.I know the puller hole is 1.5 inches but the thread eludes me. I can get one turned up if only I knew the outside thread. I would try what you suggest Rovernaut but I would prfer to use the correct puller, knowing my luck I would smash through everthing.

Don't forget to use a metal cap over the shaft end or you may damage the shaft threads.Jerry(father-in-law of a Swindon girl)
