i have just bought my first boat. it has a 100hp mercury red band motor, the controller is from a blue band motor but seems to work fine. the problem is when you try to go aboue about 10 knots it pops or slips out of gear and free revs. the only way it will go back into gear is to back the revs right off and it bangs back into gear and off you go again, slowly. any ideas

SOunds like an adjustment issue. MIght want to make sure the shifter cable is extending fully and that it is pushing the shift arm inside the motor all the way into forward gear. Have someone operate the controller while you watch what happens under the cowling and you should be able to figure out what's supposed to happen... There are barrel nuts on the cable for adjustment purposes...
- Scott

At least we hope that's all it needs. But on a motor that old, it wouldn't be uncommon for the gear and shifter mating surfaces to be worn out. Especially if the previous owner Granny shifted it.

Could be a stiff cable too.

Check your gearlube.

Sounds like your shift timming is out of alignment, A manuall for your motor will tell you howc to set things up, if this is not done right you will damage the lower unit, if you do not really know what you are doing it is well worth it to have a marine machanic set thisw up for you. It should only take him a few minuits and a min. of their hourly shop rate $45 to 70.00 this can save you a lot of damage and and downtime/cash in the long run.

Sounds like a spun prop hub to me.

Can't be a spun hub- it wouldn't bang back into gear.

I've had a spun hub grab again when I backed off the RPM's, but it didn't "bang" I could just feel when it grabbed again.

Re: red band merc popping out of gear

thanks for your help guys. i dont think its the prop spinning as it feels tight in gear. the barrel nut on the controller cabel is fully ajusted to enable reverse to be selected or it wont go into reverse easily and i thought this might be stopping it selecting foward but it goes into foward gear quite easily and goes well at low speeds. is the blueband shift controller ok on the red band motor and are there any aftermarket controllers avalible. again thanks

Bill, that's exactly what I meant-thanks for putting it more clearly than I did!
Pretty much any controller I've found will fit with the right adapters-you'll just have to ask when you buy. The redband controller is identical bar colour to the blueband (I've got one of each next to me right now)
