Merc 150 hp Black Max 1993, Water squirting from

I am not a mechanic. I do minor jobs like changing spark plugs and winterizing. My 1993 Mercury 150 hp, 2 stoke, Black Max is squirting water from the side of the botttom part of the motor. I have dual counter-rotating engines - only the starboard engine is doing this. I was getting it ready to put back in and started it up with the muffs hooked up. I've done this dozens of time over the years with different outboards. The engine is "peeing" water from the engine compartment which is healthy, showing that water is circulating through the engine. Water is coming out from the prop and is coming out of two holes onto the plate on the top of the lower unit. Where the water is squirting out (and I don't believe it should) is out of the side plate (I think it is plastic) which is on the forward/front side. It looks like this 4"x5" plate can be removed by taking screws off from the front of the motor. I know my mechanic replaced impellors in both motors last winter before I put the boat away - could this have anything to do with it?<br /><br />William

I think you need to replace the poppet valve. Is there a lil hole were the water is squirting from? That meanes the its bad.

It doesn't sound like a poppet valve by your description... It is located on the starboard side of the motor down low under the switchboxes... Basically on the right side at the bottom of the block (looking from the rear).<br /><br />I assume you are talking about water squirting out of the lower unit somewhere.. Is that correct?... If so, you need to remove the lower unit and check the water pump and possibly the pump housing gasket and pick up tube...

It's just above the lower unit, the black 4x5 plastic plate (there is a plate on each side of the motor)- water is squirting out from it on the starboard side.<br />william

I found out today that this is the plate that covers the motor mounts. What does this mean when water squirts out from here? I spoke with someone today and they said it wasn't a problem as it was just exhaust and water and no seals were involved.<br /><br />Is it a problem and why or why not?<br /><br />Thank you,<br /><br />William
