water/oil foamy stuff coming out exhaust older Merc 9.9

i have a older 9.9 Merc and it has a oily/water mixer kind of foamy coming out the exhaust. It seem to run ok I heard it may be the lower seal or the head gasket any body have any ideas

Or it may just be a buildup of combustion byproducts that gathers in the midsection during operation and drools down to the water.<br /><br />If you are really concerned it will become apparent when you service the lower unit and water pump impeller, as to if the lower unit is in need of resealing.

thanks for the info. it is quite a lot of oily foam. it will coat the inside of the exhuast. This is my first and only outboard motor I have ever owned. So a real rookie!!! The Bass Pro service dept said it could be the lower unit seal and then he said it could be a head gasket. He also mentioned the oil/gas mixture might be to rich. I've had three people mention the lower unit.<br /><br />I thought I might tear into in before it got warm enough to fish (at leaset here in Missouri)
