2002 150HP MERCURY SHIFTING

MOTOR SHIFTS HARD/GRINDS WHEN I PUT INTO FORWARD GEAR ( OR REVERSE GEAR ). IS THIS A COMMON PROBLEM ? AM I LOOKING AT A FUTURE MAJOR REPAIR?

Are you easing it into gear or just pushing it into gear with a swift steady motion. Outboards are not designed to be eased into gear.
