Mariner/Yamaha lower unit

I just bought a 1985 40hp Mariner, the lower unit is bad, the motor is made in japan and I think it is not compatible with Mercury but actually a Yamaha??? Is this correct and does anyone know where I can find a lower unit to fit???

Yes, the motor is a Yahama.... Don't know what area you're in, but try a wrecker/breaker.

Ebay has lowers from time to time, usually cost 100-250 US. Many places on internet sell lowers such as www.iboats.com or Ellisport Bay Marine http://www.newagemarineparts.com or http://www.northernoutboard.com or www.nicksoutboardmarine.com and many more. Sometimes the gear ratio is not exactly the same as your original so you have to ask, or, get a different propeller.
