Folding outboards: any issues?

I've seen quite a few small folding Johnson and Evinrude outboards, and they look like a good idea. Does anyone know if they're as reliable as their non-folding counterparts? Is the folding lower unit more prone to problems?
Thanks!

Re: Folding outboards: any issues?

Hi Phantom,
They are good little motors and to my knowledge are not prone to any more problems than the standard units. The gearfoot itself is the same, as is the powerhead portion.
The 3hp and 4hp versions are basically the same from '68 onwards, with the '67 and prior models having an integral tank (with the option of a fuel pump and external tank). Keep a little extra oil in the gas, too, as they use old-school technology inside, with babbit bearings at all but the top main bearing. 32:1 ought to be sufficient...
- Scott
