Default 25 HP Mercury Shift cable

I am working on a 25 HP mercury, not sure what year, but the shift cable comes back to gear mounted on the left front part of the motor, then on the top of this gear box is another short cable that goes into the motor and finishes the shifting system. I need to replace this short cable, does anyone know how to get the gear box loose from the mounting, it is cast aluminum and appears to be screwed in or pushed in to the motor case & I do not want to put to much pressure on it or heat it? Thanks for any suggestions or websites with diagrams.Rick

Anyone know how to tell the date of the motor from the numbers on the ID?

If you've got your serial number, look here: http://www.maxrules.com/merc_contents.html You'll need a PDF reader.Aldo
