new guy 225 optimax

I am new to the boating world and currently looking at a couple boats with 225 optis. One is a 2000 with 125 hours and the other is a 2001 with 300 hours. I have heard about a law suit against Merc with Opti owners but I don't know why. I 'm looking for any info on these engines. and if I should maybe looking at buying a boat with different engines.

Well nobody's gonna want to touch this one. The Optimax is widely misunderstood. The 2000 had some issues, and the 2001 had some different issues, none of which were that big a deal; mostly direct injectors and spark plugs. I wouldn't be afraid of either if I knew the history. The ECU can be downloaded and tell a lot about how the units were used. The bottom line to me would be --do you have a qualified dealer to check them out; and then maintain them---these motors live up to the stingy fuel consumption advertised; but are definately not for the guy who wants to tinker with his own motor.
