Default Winterized '91 Mariner 75 Stator now dead?

Engine winterized 20 months ago then wouldn't spark. Found and fixed loose flywheel magnets - still no spark. Got the diagnostic procedure and relevant meters and wroekd through the system. The stator is reading Open (5MegOhms) Blue to Red so that explains no spark.I've two questions on this for you experts and I hope you can help. Can a stator die like this while sitting unused and does it mean the Switchbox is maybe OK or the casue of the dead stator. All other values on the stator resistance check out OK, red to ground and the two yellow leads, etc.I can't see the loose magnets killin the stator while cranking as tehre was no physical damage. The stator has black molding - does this ID it as teh old unreliable 'black' stator or how can I tell the better red stator? Is tehre any way to test the switch box without a good stator sending juice into it- I can access good test gear? If not can a new stator get killed by a switchbox? Finally any recommendations for where to pick up good used stators and maybe switchboxes, even better if you could suggest people who'd ship to Ireland but I'll find a way round that if neccessary. Finally I can't find the serial number on this engine and I thought I knew where to look on the transom mounts. The only number I can find is on a bit of foil on the T+T pump. Could that be it?Many thanks.

Don't buy Mercury Electronics, CDI or Rapair are much more dependable--Bob Ck. the engine block it should have the serial number stamped in it

Good luck with your new stator Cistn. I've got a replacement stator for mine and about to fit it. I just hope it's not a case of the switchbox went and took out the stator.I was hoping someone might reassure me I wouldn't zap the replacement or the switchbox so I'm going to install it and check everything statically before trying to crank it.I'll post how I go!

Success! My garden (or yard as you guys say) was filled with the sweet music of a 3cylinder 2stroke. After a couple of years of no use it was filled with a bit of smoke too and also a lot of water from the muffs! So it seems my stator just died while the engine was stationary along with the magnets popping off. It is possible though that some evidence of minor corrosion on the switchbox terminals might have caused poor contacts and hurt the stator while attempting to start it. I cleaned and sprayed everything when refitting it. Interestingly the max voltage from the replacement Stator low speed wire while cranking were well down on spec even though it ohmed out in the centre of the spec. However the big beautiful fat blue sparks told me all I needed to know and fitting plugs and gas resulted in an instant symphony.
