Can anyone tell me what the flush plug is for on my 1971 50hp Merc? It s located above the vent plug on the lower unit. Thanks

So you can hook a flush fitting to it and flush fresh water thru the cooling system; it's to be used only when the motor's not running.

A lot simpler just to flush the motor if needed on a set of 'muffs'.

It's kinda like your apendix. It serves no purpose anymore, but unce upon a time it did have a function. Before hose muffs, you had to take that plug out and screw an adaptor in there that connected to a garden hose. After running in mud or saltwater you run garden hose water thru it to flush it out.
