Default 40 hp mariner mag 4 cyl--oil&cold start

i have a 1989 mariner mag 40 4 cyl,it seems that the oil injection is smoking much more than normal, smokes very bad and seems to be running rich. is it possibe for me to disconnect the oil tank and just add oil to my fuel tank? as i dont trust the pump system anyway. also what would be the proper ratio of oil to gas? 50-1? i use a 12 gal tank. cold start problem is how can i check the choke solenoid to see if it is priming the carb? i have to crank and crank before it will start, some times it may take 5-10 minutes. dont want to take my starter out. how does the choke solenoid deliver the fuel for cold start? i only have about2-3 hundred hours on this motor and it has always run smooth, like a car. i have had new plugs installed and the lower carb overhauled as it was leaking fuel. all and any help would be appreciated, as the marinas are very very busy and VERY EXPENSIVE. many thanks- ed eckert gladwin michigan

You can disconnect the oil tank and run a 50:1 mix in the fuel, but most likely the oil control arm is misadjusted. As for the choke if you disconnect the small hose from the choke solenoid at the carb/carbs and place a small container under them when you depress the choke there should be a small amount of fuel come out. Also there should be a red lever on the side of the choke solenoid. That is the manual choke rotate it to the up position and see if motor starts better, be sure to move it back to down position

well im going back to quick silver, other brands just dont work as well, but i did disconnect the oil tank and im going to just add oil to the gas. i have more control over the mixture. i did check out the choke operation but the line from the choke solenoid goes behind the electronic control module(had to remove) then goes into a three way valve that feeds directly into the cyls, and yes there was fuel there when i used the key switch. thanks to everyone for there help and suggestions,i guess i owe you a cold one.
