This is a 75hp mercury 1996 model. THe boat ran great on the muffs before taking to river. I had the water pump replaced a couple of days ago. When the boat was put into water i cranked it and it ran fine. Water pressure seemed okay. After running at full throtle about 5200 rpms the moter suddenly died and would not crank the starter will engage but flywheel is locked. THe forward and reverse gears are there but in forward the prop will spin and make a clicking sound in reverse no movement is allowed. Any help would be great just wondering if this motor sounds salvageable.

Re: 75 MERCURY FLYWHEEL LOCKED
It could be the motor or gearcase. You won't be able to tell by spinning the prop. Remove the gearcase and see if the flywheel turns then. You might also check your gearlube. Chunks of metal in the lube wouldn't be a good sign. A bit of metallic isn't unusual.

no the pull cord cannot turn the flywheel nor can my arm. Tryed that but no luck. If i take the lower unit off and the flywheel turns that will definately tell me if it is in the motor or gears correct?
