I cant for the life of me, without breaking it, figure out how to remove the base to the water pump. I have gotten everything else apart without a problme but the base wont budge. Can anyone help here?

I fought with mine (1963 Merc 1000) for a while until I noticed the "flush" screw on the lower unit threaded into the water pump base. Slid off fairly easily after that, with just the resistance from the seals.
