Hello,HELP!!!!
I ran my very low hour, like new Mercury 7.5 H.P. S/N 5145493 in water test barrel after being stored in my basement on saw horse for all these past years.
First,I would like to know what year this motor is cause I don't exactly remember what year long ago I bought it.
Second, the motor started up and ran beautifully till it got hot because I noticed no water exiting the pee hole tube. I checked for a blockage on both water pump intake and water pump exit and there was none as test air and water came out freely of pee hole. The water intake screen was clear also. So I think the water pump must be damaged after not being used (dry) for so many years. Is this possible?
Is it a very big and expensive job for a repair shop to change out this water pump? I can't even see where the water pump is to change it out,so I figure the powerhead must be taken off to get at it.
I don't know if it is worth it to buy a repair manual to try to repair it myself and locate new parts for it, and besides It still looks shiny new,so shouldn't I have it done professionally? Thank you for any help you can offer and my 12 year old daughter is waiting for me to take her out fishing for only her second time in her life cause dad has been too busy working these past years....SOUND FAMILIAR???

Re: Mercury 7.5 H.P. Water Pump Not Working

Welcome to our great site.. ;)
You will find a lot of assistance on here.
It's a late 1978 motor
http://www.marineparts.com/partspages/techhelp/tech14.htm
http://www.dougrussell.com/partscat...eaction=getcomp&colid=01&coldesc=75&index=486
The impeller (47 - 65957 )is most likey set in a bent shape as it is rubber and MUST be replaced. It is an easy job but the L/U may be hard to remove if it is corroded in the driveshaft. It will be a stainless steel shaft (easier). I will upload some generic links for the job, but a manual is really best.
BTW Don't run it long without water, as you will burn the top piston.

http://www.diy-boat.com/Pages/Archives/links/eng982.html
http://www.bassboatcentral.com/sttips.htm
