i have a 20 hores merc that we just put a new lower unit on. The motor we got it off of was the same make and model and the shaft was the same size. When we took it out on the water reverce was neutral and neutral was foward. It wouldent shift into foward. Could it have somthing to do with the lower unit swaping. Please Help

Sounds as if you misaligned the shift linkage (not the gears - only the linkage).

The actual gear (F/N/R) that the lower unit is put in when you assemble, must match the setting of the lever.

Yours obviously was in neutral when the lever showed reverse and you put it together.

BTW: Another weird experience can occur if you replace a LH lower unit with a RH (=FWD~REW swap!)

Jokoboy, UU is correct. There are actually two "neutrals" on these lower units. When you go to put the motor together, put the the lower unit into neutral, and put the motor control into neutral. Now move the motor control into forward and observ the rotation. Move the LU the same way, and make sure it is in forward.
