water pump compatability

hi, i have a water pump drive from a mercury 650 65 hp. i am selling it on ebay and a customer wants to know if it is compatable with a 40 hp mercury ? it was outboard jets california stamped on the side of it and has a patent number of 3082732 on it.also oj-86 i stamped also maybe a model number and a 59996 number too.<br />thanks ,<br />clauton

what years are these motors, the 40 and the 65...... that info is needed

If the motor is a 1973 or later 3-cylinder 650, and the 40hp is the 402-style model, then yes, the jet unit should swap out. If the unit is off a 4-cylinder 650, then no it won't. Also, be aware that some changes were made in the 1970s to the stud placement in the lower unit to exhaust housing connection. Later ones are about 1/16" further apart. Year for year, the 2-cylinder 40 hp, 4-cylinder 50hp, and 3-cyl. 65/70hp used the same lower units, save for the 3-cylinder models using a different gear ratio. That said, the jet unit ought to fit any of them (if the initial 650 it came off of was the 3-cylinder variety)...<br />- Scott
