Default Needed: Mercury 500 Shift Shaft

I have a 1974 Mercury 500 4 cylinder 2 stroke and need a long shift shaft for this engine. Anyone have one? Mercury doesn't make them anymore, and I'm having trouble locating one. The one in the engine snapped and is basically destroyed. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Look for "John's Old Mercury Board" , AOMC, or Grubb's Marine.Good Luck!-W

I spoke with the very helpful people at Mercury Marine and they to directed me to Grubbs Marine, which did have one used shift shaft... now on its way to me. Problem solved. But I do have one more question. Seems the lack of a shift shaft could have permanently rendered this engine unusable... and it also seems it's a tough part to find. Do these things last a long time or should I now try to find a backup part for the future?
