I'm in the process of rebuilding the carbs and fuel pumps on this engine (1963 Merc 1000). In the lower pump (the one where the fuel line from the quick connect enters), both check valves are oriented in the same direction. Is this correct? The motor did start before I disassembled the pumps and carbs, but I didn't take it above a fast idle (on muffs).
Thanks.

bh357,
That sounds wrong to me.To figure this out, trace the fuel from the line in to the carb. When fuel enters a pump chamber, the valve must be sprung so it can enter.Same thing for it to exit and go to the other fuel pump.Springs should be on the carb side of the flow.
DHP

Re: Fuel pump check valve orientation - 1963 Merc 1000

This is a very old post, but I'm going to respond anyway. I do not have a '63 1000, but I have both a '63 850 and a '65 1000 which both have the same fuel pumps, so I'm assuming that the '63 1000 does as well.

Figure out which is the fuel inlet by determining which valve covers the hole where the fuel comes in from the tank. Orient the valve so that the "nipple" side is facing out, toward you. Orient the outlet valve so that the "nipple" is in the hole, away from you. This link below is to a parts fiche which also indicates the relative orientation of the valves.
