Default stater on 40HP Mariner Mag

I was told that the stater has gone bad on my 96 Mariner 40hp. Is this something i could replace on my own (limited outboard knowledge). I was qouted a repair bill of around 400, 250 being for the part. They are replacing the part with the new red kit, Does this seem right? ThanksAndy

i have taken out and out in the starter on a mariner 40 100 times due to the fact i need to take ti off to get to the carbs. its 4 bolts. make sure u pay attention tot which wires go where and that u dont drop the top and botton backet(look welded, but ar not, bolts keep them in) into the drink. yup, did that.. very easy access etc, try it out

Stator under the flywheel, or Starter? It does make a difference!!I think he means "Stator" because he's talking about the "Red Kit", which is a replacement for all these Merc stators that seem to be burning out all over the place. Great design, eh? Guaranteed more money for Merc and the dlr!If you can pull a flywheel, you can replace the stator. Once the flywheel is off, the job's a piece of cake. The big thing is having the correct tool to pull the flywheel with. If you don't have the factory tool, or (on this model) have no way to pull the flywheel with a harmonic balancer puller, best to let the shop do the job. I think there's a link on this site for tools and manuals, if not maybe some of the other Merc Guru's can chime in.You'll also need a torque wrench to tighten down the flywheel nut to specs afterwards.HTH and Good Luck............ed

thanks guys for your help. It is indeed the stator under the flywheel. I dont have anything to pull the flywheel...at least not the factory puller or a harmonic balancer. Guess that means I might as well suck it up and pay the shop. Do you all think that what they've told me ($400) sounds right? THanksAndy

Labor sounds right, but the part might be a little overpriced. Last time I checked, the stator was roughly $200 for a 40 Mariner 4cyl.

maybe i am off on the price, i know it was 200-250 then labor brought the estimated total to 400. The shop should be reputable as its a large retailer. It just suck to have to dump that much more into the boat...oh well, the joys of owning a boat. ThanksAndy

Did they at least run tests to determine that it was indeed the stator. I know I'd be pi$$ed if I spent $400 and t didn;t fix the problem. What problem were you having with it anyway?

motor was running fine, then just wouldnt start the next morning. Took it to one mechanic and he tested the plugs and said that it wasnt firing at all. Took it to boats unlimited in durham and they started doing the diagnostics and found that it was the stator. Kinda makes a little sense since the stator is under the flywheel and the flywheel was staying partially engaged. That may not have anything to do with the stator though, I dont know. It could have been in gear or something at the time. I looked up the part on the net and the stator ranged from 218 up to 3--something. I dont have much of an option at this point other than to let them fix it i guess. Seems like this problem is a little over my head, and I dont have the tool to remove the flywheel.
