Default Mercury/Mariner 9.9 reverse interlock

We have one older Mariner 9.9 two-stroke and three new Mercury four-strokes all with the gear change combined with the throttle twistgrip. All suffer from a reverse interlock that allows the engine to jump up in reverse. The interlock is activated by a curved metal bracket that partially unseats and fails to operate. Any cures or thoughts?

About all I can suggest is calling your dealer and ask what's up. Maybe you need to flip a lever or something. This has been brought up before, but on older engines.. What are the serial numbers on the newer motors. Or just one of them?

There should be a black plastic clevis clamped around the shift shaft right at that curved mechanism, that moves up and down when you shift this thing. It just clamps onto the shaft and can slip or get loose and just fall off.Is it there?

Thanks for your helpRick; these engine should interlock automatically as Hondon says. Sadly, there is no locking lever as we have on our other much older Mariner and Evinrude. The 1996 Mariner's serial is 09903025, model 9.9M. The new 2005 model 4 -stroke Mercuries include 0R046749. The mechanism is identical on all of them.Hondon; You are right about the mechanism but all are intact and in the correct place. They move the interlock bracket but it slightly unseats and fails to work.
