Low water pressure during idle

I have an 87 Mariner 200 V6. the water pressure when bought 6 months ago would run 5-10PSI idle and 15-20 when mid RPM's... had some work done that required head removal. got it back and pressure slowy dropped off over several uses. finally no water at idle. rebuilt the water pump with impeller kit. it sprays weak (barely a full stream but it is full) at idle now but still no pressure readout until you get some RPM's. I did notice that with earmuffs on, a very large amount of water purs out the back of the prop. is this normal? This only happens when the motor is running. the water is fairly hot coming out the pee hole but pretty weak.

Re: Low water pressure during idle

The first item I would look at would be the poppet valve. The symptoms you describe indicate that the water is making a fast trip through the block and out the prop (where the poppet valve dumps excess pressure at higher rpm). Check for a damaged seat or spring and you should locate the source of your troubles.

Happy boating! :D
