Re: correct pitch prop for merc 200hp v6
Hi,

I have a Merc 175 o/b. I finally got worked out the best prop for my boat... , My Boat is a 21'foot walk around... When I bought it, it had a 13 3/4 by 17p. At WOT I was over 6000 rpm, 36-38 mph.. WOT S/B 5200 to 5600... I am now running a vented 14 1/4 by 20p SS, WOT is 5200 loaded (46MPH) and 5600 empty (52MPH)... I know that Stainless Steel cost the big $$$ and to try 4 or 5 diffrent props can add up! Your local dealer won't just let you try them either.. So here is what I did... I bought, tried and sold them on Ebay!!! I bough an aluminum 14 1/2 x 19, was ok, droped my rpm, but was a dog out of the hole... Sold my 17, bought a SS 19p, ok out of the hole, but over tach, sold it, got a 14 1/2 x 21p vented, got out of the water better than the 19 aluminum but was just under 5000 rpm WOT when loaded, Next! Ended up with my current 14 1/4 x 20p and kept the aluminum 19 for a spare... After all said and done, I think I broke even on the aluminum spare and less than $200 for the SS.
I found each inch of pitch was about 220 rpm, every 1/4 inch of diameter larger was about -30 to -40 rpm.. The diffrence between aluminum and SS was about 1 full pitch, a 19 alu was = to my 20p SS (RPM only, not speed(alum 5mph less) Vented props make the boat come out of the water faster, like a 17p would. The vents allow the prop to spin up faster, then it stops venting at higher speeds... hope this helps!!
