87 150 merc v6 overheated wont start

I ran it for about 5 minutes with no water pumping to get to the dock It was smoking pretty good I replaced the torn up impeller and plugs now it will not start what could I look for to get it running again thanks

Start with a compression test.

thanks Ill do that in the am all that I get now is an occasional backfire
