I recently bought a boat with a 115 mercury 2 stroke 4 cylinder 1995 yr. I brought it in for a tune up to the mechanic and everything checked fine. Took it out one the water and when I shift in to forward or reverse I get a loud knocking (or what I think is loud it is my first boat)noise. Is this considered normal? or something that should be looked at to stop any problems from occuring. Thank you for any help.

Re: Mercury 115 knocking when shift

If by knocking you are reffering to the "grinding" of the gears as you try to ease into forward or reverse,......

It is you, that is doing it so easily, slowly, and carefully, causing "this issue".

Outboard motors need to be engaged into the gear "swiftly", "directly" and "without hesitation" so as to avoid this grinding, as it can cause wear on the shifting gears.

If this is what you are experiencing, with practice you should be able to engage the gear rapidly then slowly progress onto the throttle actuation of your control lever.
