I have a 95' Mercury 25 hp with a bent prop shaft. The shaft looks like it is bent with a twist in the splines on the out side of the lower unit. I can take the prop off but I can not get the thrust hub off. I have a Clymer manual and it says you can take the prop shaft off without taking the lower unit off. Is this true or should I take it off to be more able to replace any parts the bent shaft may have ruined. Thanks!!!
Hi JRBThat is true, you can remove the prop shaft w/o droping the L/U. How ever I agree with DHP, you just as well drop it because you will want to perform other maintance as well as the repairs.
Thanks for replying, I needed someone to tell me to pull the lower unit off. I still have a few questions. First the thrust hub will only slide about an inch on the prop shaft, my only idea is to cut the prop shaft off. The splines are twisted and holding it on. Also I need a spanner wrench part no. 83843-1. Can anyone tell me where to buy one besides a dealership? Thanks again!!!
Unicorn, I hit a wing dike in the mighty mississippi river. Not one but two. At least now I know where their at. Found out the hard way!!! Also to everyone else I'm looking for a prop shaft and carrier assembly for 1995 Mercury. Thanks,JRB
