major cold crank problems

I have a 1972 65 hp Merc. I have an awful time cold cranking. Once it cranks and warms, it runs great! Once I get to my fishing spot and troll for a while, it won't start again. The prime bulb gets soft sometimes, but not always. Even after pumping the primer bulb, it won't always start. Choke works fine. I've changed the primer bulb and some of the fuel line. I've had to crank so long on the lake it has run the battery down and I have to switch over to the deep cycle. Brand new cranking battery tool. Also, on that note, the battery cables get so hot at the battery connection, they are melting the plastic to my batter box (external hookups). Could any of this be related? I really want to fix this, as when it's running now...it runs excellent! Thanks. This board is GREAT!
