Default tachometer problems on 92 Mariner 150

I just had my tach replaced and connections redone but my tach is not working properly still. It will register at idle just under 1000, when I hit it to plain off it will rise but as soon as i am level it tachs out then back to 0 and doesnt register again until I turn key off and on and repeat. Any suggestions???

See if you can borrow a known good tach and that will tell you if the tach is bad. It happens even with a new one..

It is a new tach....Bedee. I thought that the other one was bad because it was doing this and put this new one in and the same thing is happening.

Hi Swebb, what is the 6 digit part number on the tach that begins with 9? Sounds like something other than the tach is bad, and the wrenches here should be able to help you. I can verify the tach is compatible with your engine from the part number on the label(on Monday). Have a good weekend.

Bedee tachometer....941895. If this is the correct tach what should the setting be 1,2,3,or 4. Thanks again for the help.

I belive your tach signal is coming from a rectifer that changes a/c current from the stator to d/c current used for systems. If this goes bad, you will have problems with the signal. Sometimes its a combined rectifer/regulator (preventing overcharging). You might have two regulator/rectifers (2x20amp in parralel.) If thats the case, you can switch the lead from the top r/r (grey wire) to the unused lead comming off the bottom r/r and confirm if your problem is the rectifer or the tach.
