1966 Merc 650 cooling

Brand new pump and impeller. Motor runs great but no water pissing out of the tell tale. Any ideas what the problem could be? I removed the lower unit after I ran it and noticed alot of sand laying on top of the pump housing and spalttered around the exhaust tube and driveshaft.<br />Does this motor have a thermostat?

I have a 1964 650 that I just bought and finished putting a lower unit on. When I tested it off of the boat trailer without unloading there was a lot of water pissing out of the tell tale (exhaust). A couple of days later after some adjustments I took it out on a lake and it ran like a top but no visible amount of water from the tell tale but sort of something spraying off from the side. I was also told that these motors expel water around the prop. Anyhow if it isn't heating it has to be cooling. I am not an expert in any way shape or form but I am just passing on my recent experience. <br />Cheers.
