8.5 hp Merc overheating ('71)

recently took out my '71 Merc and it started to overheat. Last time I used it (last year)was in brackish water. How can I make sure I cleaned it out good enough, or might it be another problem?

When was the last time the impellor was changed? Did you properly flush?

If it has a thermostat check it. The salt in the water can cause rust on the thermostat itself. Making it so it won't open at the proper time. If there is a thermostat, put it in boiling water. If it opens up then the thermostat is good.

Your motor does not have a thermostat.
