Default Mercury starter

I have a 2000 mercuty 90hp outboard. For the last month it has turned over slow on the initial cold start then done fine the rest of the day (possible starter drag ?). Yesterday it started then died then would not turn over again. When this happened the tilt trim also stopped working. Also with the bilge pump running I could turn the key or press the trim button and it turned the bilge off for about five seconds then it would slowly start back up. My uneducated guess is bad starter but I would appreciate advice from some of you with more knowledge. Ya'll have a great board here and any advice is much appreciated.

Put a charger on the battery. Sounds to me like it's failing.-W

Have battery load tested at any auto parts house. How old is it? Could have a bad cell..

Thanks for the responses. The tilt trim is wired in with the two main motor wires that go to the battery. With the wires hooked to the battery the trim doesnt work. To get the motor tilted up I unhooked the wires for the tilt at a joint and used jumper cables to hook directly to the wires and raised the motor using the same battery. If the battery raised the motor with the jumper cables then it has enough juice. OR am I missing something? Also after reading some old posts I shorted between the positive post on the cylinoid and the small positive stud. The starter did not turn. All I got was sparking.

Check the voltage at the pos. (+) post on the starter when you jumper the starter solenoid. If you've got a full 12vdc, the starter is busted. c/6Hooty
