I posted this earlier to the incorrect forum<br /><br />Can anyone tell e what the "spl" means?

Special. It's a run of identically optioned motors put together at a discount price because they make a ton of the same dang thing.

years ago the spl motors were non power trim and non oil injected but in later years they were almost identical to regular production runs. other than that I guess marketing liked the name.<br /> good luck and keep posting

Rodbolt is correct. The SPL models would usually have a simple low output charging system without a regulator. In the case of the 28, it had a different lower unit. There was no zinc anode protection on the models either.<br /><br />For the most part they were made in 28, 48, 88, and 112 hp configurations.

They were identical to their same/close hp counterparts except they may lack oil injection and/or power tilt and trim.
