Default Mercury Tach

I have a Mercury 65hp 3 cylinder 1974 model. I bought a Faria tach for it, and when I start the motor, it goes to 0 and wont go above that. When I turn the motor off, it drops back down. So, there is a little movement when I start the motor. Can anyone tell me what the pole setting for this motor is? Is there something else I can do to make this tach work?

hey mellowyellow--if nate doesn't need that tach i do--just bought a '71 650 from flebay--3 cyl.--I have a post here 'bout checking for spark on same motor--i need to know if i can safely jumper red terminal to white terminal on power head harness connector to check for spark while pulling motor over with a length of rope. Red is from rectifier and white goes to switchbox. Am i correct in assuming that i need power from rect. to switchbox to make sparks on a thunderbolt ignition?my email is: pat.campbell@harley-davidson.comthanks MY

MY, according to my wire diagram with ignition switch in run position power from rectifier/batt is routed to white wire from switchbox--what i'm looking for is to test for spark-can i safely jump the rectifier/batt (power) term to the "white switchbox" on the powerhead--i'm assuming i need some sort of power to switchbox to make spark--can't imagine making spark w/o power to box????????

Nate,The tach should read something, regardless of the pole position it is in, too fast, too slow or even pegged--but not barely moving off 0.
