What type of puller do you need to remove the flywheel? Or can you remove the 6 bolts markit then remove the flywheel to replace the stator?

There is a special tool required to remove the flywheel. If you take out the 6 bolts and do not get the flywheel back together properly..the engine will not run. You will still be left with removing the hub assembly anyway.TMD

The puller threads down the big hole on top of the fly-wheel, then bolt is threaded down anther hole in the center of the puller, which pushes on the crank (actually on an aluminum spacer that comes with the tool so you don't muck up the crank), and pops the fly-wheel up... (usually with a pop..)It is a mercury special tool, and can probably be purchased at your local deal, and maybe even online somewhere..Scott..

Yes..then I believe you will have enough room to pull the stator over the hub...MAKE SURE You mark the fly wheel.TMD

ThanksThis seems a better way to go instead of buying a special puller to remove the flywheel

Flywheel is very well balanced, if you pull the bolts and mark it, when you re assemble you will notice play in the the bolt holes before tightening them. pull the plugs and use a dial gauge or some type of reference point and spin the shaft w/ a big socket to be sure the 'wheel is centered before final torque. Off a few thousanths @ 5 grand can make bad crankshaft-breaking vibration.
