Mercruiser and Mercury the same??

I was wondering what the difference between the Mercruiser and Mercury engines?<br /><br />P Spencer<br />Dallas, Texas

I believe that Mercruiser outdrives are made by Mercury, but the engines are adapted automobile engines.<br /><br />Merc does make most of the Mercury ooutboards, but some use powerheads made by Yamaha.

I bought a fitting to service the lower unit and it states it will fit Mercruiser. Does that meas it will fit my Merc 50 as well?
