Merc stuck in forward

Hi, <br />I just installed a new powerhead on an 87 merc 90hp, 3 cyl. I cannot get the lower unit to shift to neutral or reverse. The problem is in the lower unit, not the cables/controls. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot and correct this problem? Any info would be helpful.

did you also remove the lower unit? if yes, sounds<br />like the clutch dog wasn't in the proper gear when<br />it was re-installed. this happened to me once,<br />had to remove it and adjust cluth dog.<br />good luck,<br />M.Y.

Thanks Mellowyellow,<br /><br />I did not remove the lower unit, however, I may have overextended the shift lever going down into the lower unit! Hope I can fix it!
