Default mariner water pump, help!

When changing the impeler on a 98 Mariner 150 is it required to put the engine in gear befor removing the LU? Also do I need to drain the gear case oil? I know that this is off topic but can anyone tell me what the compression should be for this engine and does elevation affect the out come of a compression test? Thanks.

Hello,There is no need to put it in gear. It is easier if you leave it in neutral. That way you know its in neutral when u put it back. I would reccomend changing the fluid in the lower while its off it's a good practice to do it at least once a year depending on hours used.
