Default How does choke work on Mercury?

Hi, I have a 2000 40hp Mercury. I have the ignition style push in choke. How exactly does this work? Does it move butterflys over the venturis or does it shoot gas into the carb throats? Thanks

Default Re: How does choke work on Mercury?

Its not a true choke, more of a pressure carb fuel injector set up. A small electricle solenoid opens the fuel pressure directly from the pressure side of the fuel system and allows direct flow of fuel into the carb venturie via auxilliry little fuel lines. Thats why only a "touch" of the "enrichner" button is required. The engine can be flooded very quickly if you're not careful. The engine MUST be cranking for this to work. If the fuel pump is not working then there is no fuel pressure. You can prime the engine with the fuel bulb and someone holding the button in if there is enough battery juice if you have a starter problem and need to rope start.
