Mercury Stator Resistance

What wires would you test to get resistance on a stator for a 1985 3 cylinder Mercury. The stator has one red and one blue wire. Would it be red and blue to ground or red to blue?

I know I need a manual but this is for a friend and..................

The clymer manual I have does not have those numbers. It would help to know the horsepower and serial number.
