Re: rectifier for '72 merc 1150

The good dealer here in West MI charged me about $46 for one last year I think. The new ones are about 1" square on a bracket and solid state.

You will have AC in your power and no increase in DC as you run it if bad and your stator is good. After you fix it, it will have little AC and run up DC with rpm. Mine runs 12.8v at rest, 13.4 at idle and upto 16v at 4000rpm. Check your battery water on these as they are not regulated.
I have a '73 150, but it seems to have 125hp even though it is in great condition. I can only get 50-54mph on my little 17', and it runs best at around 5200rpm, not 5800 like Merc says(after 6 props I have a laser 20). They say I should be at 50mph with a 21p at 5800rpm. They must have changed the gear ratio and did not know it.

Re: rectifier for '72 merc 1150

thanks for the info. Sho.
my understanding is that the I6 is basically
the same as mine geared up a bit. think they
are the same from about 80 to 150, 80 under
utilized and 135 and up over. the 115 runs
about the same as yours on a 16' open bow Sea
Sprite. from everything I have read on them,
they are good reliable motors :D
I will take reliablility over a little more speed
any day.....

You have a point, 1973 was a long time ago! Mine sat in a barn for a minimum 8 years while the owner got divorced/moved/whatever. I has good compression and all, and runs great after an impellor, tuneup, and rectifier. Now if the boat was that nice...but that '73 Checkmate has good lines and handles nice. Not sure if I should put a transom, interior, and paint on there or get another.

Hard to find boats like that here for my price range. At $900 I could not pass on it. The tansom is getting bad; but I am doing a '85 Bayliner right now, fitting the new wood in there, and it has gone easy so far. When you bolt the motor down: seal the holes! A new Checkmate goes 67mph with a new 150. Now that upsets me.
