Default Mercury - Cooling System

I am using a 40hp Mercury 2 Cylinder 2 Cycle 80s Model outboard. I have inspected and installed a new impeller in the lower unit and water still isn't flowing from the exit hole up near the top of the engine. What can I check to try and fix this problem. Any help is appreciated.

Pull the lower unit back off and hook a garden hose up the coolant tube that comes out of the impeller and goes to the powerhead. If water doesn't come out the pee hole something is blocked. If it does you still have problems with the impeller.I just reread your post when you say exit hole are you referring to the pee hole or some other coolant discharge?

before you tear the lower unit off again, put some muffs on it, take the top cowls off and start it up. my old Merc 500 won't piss until I push the rpms up a little, then it goes like a race horse. yours may be the same. before your run the rpms up a little, feel of the water jacket in front of the plugs. If it ain't cool to the touch, shut her down immediately and use compressed air to track down the problem. if its cool to the touch it will probably pee with higher rpms.

If you have t-stats, it may take a minute to heat and open before you see anything.
