I just bought a used Skeeter boat with a 1987 Mariner 115 outboard inline 6 cylinder with 3 carbs. I took it in for a tune-up and the shop guy said to get rid of the fuel-injection oil reservoir and reconnect the gas line directly from the gas tank to the motor, bypassing the oil reservoir and pump, then start mixing the oil directly into the gas tank at a 50 to 1 ratio. He said he thought the oil injection was an aftermarket add-on. I'm confused  -- is this true? Should I disconnect it and starting mixing the oil/gas myself?

Thanks.

Your mechanic is correct about eliminating that type of oil injection system as they were prone to failures, however it is not an aftermarket unit. It is the Mercury Autoblend system.

In the for what it is worth department I would disconnect "any" VRO system from an engine I bought used.
