Default Mariner 115 dies when placed in gear

1983 Mariner 115, 1983 XS260 HydraSportCarburetors recently rebuiltCompression checkedNew Spark PlugsRebuilt starterMotor starts easily, revs up good in neutral. When I shift it in gear it dies. When I finally get it going, she runs fine at all RPM ranges. Once I bring it back to idle or shut her down to fish, same thing all over again. Fuel bulb is always hard, seams to be getting plenty if not to much gas.

I rebuilt the fuel pump over the weekend, no help. The motor is simply flooding out. A local shop rebuilt the carburetors around this time last year so I have been checking everything else. Now IÂ’m thinking I got screwed on the carb job. The motor will run all day at WOT (5500 rpm 55 mhp), but going through the no wake zones can be hell

I don't know about being screwed, but it's not really that strange to see carb problems pop up annually or even more often. Sometimes it's not untill repeated "fixes" that whatever it was causing the problem is found and or corrected.Perhaps there is a bit of internally desintegrating fuel line, pump component, or filter, letting debris enter the fuel flow being caught up in the needle seat. Perhaps all that's need is a remove, blow out, lookover, and replace.Maybe parts in the carbs that might be nonservicable are failing and the carbs need replacing.Maybe you need to install a fuel filter inline.Get it serviced, or do it yourself, at least when you do it, it comes with a lifetime warranty. (funny eh?)

I'm begining to think you may be missing one cylinder. Run a compression test.If it passes, ignore the fuel delivery unitl you have check for good, hot, consistant spark on all 6.

YepblazeI'll pull them off this weekend and look for thrash. One of the reason I wasn't thinking carbs was do to the fact that it cranked and idle so well on the water hose. Thanks

Ooops. Missed where you had checked compression.srry.These engines will run beautifuly on 5 cylinders...Until placed into gear at idle. Other than that, they'll run fine for a while, with only a 300RPM or so drop in top end.Another thing that can cause this is plugged exaust ports (carbon).

Thanks 12FoooterI will re-check the compression on all six and study up on the carbon build up.

These motors are very sensitve to float height adjustments. Kinda tricky actually. Pull the cover and take a look down the throats of all three carbs for puddled fuel at idle( in neutral). Great motors when then idle ok. Good luck!

You nailed it 12Footer,#1 128 PSI#2 86 PSI#3 125 PSI#4 105 PSI#5 125 PSI#6 did not checkPouring a teaspoon of oil in #2 did not improve compression. Tried to de-carb with Seafoam deep creep no help. As engine warmed up all cylinders fail off around 8-10 Lbs except #2 it dropped about 20 Lbs.Where do I go from here, boats been in family since it was brand new and has been well maintained. Scrap or rebuild? As usual money is a factor.
