I'm new to this site, but it looks like there is a ton of knowledge floating around. Hopefully, someone out there can help me.

I have a 1987 mercury outboard 70 hp 3 cylinder. For some reason, I can't get the thing to full throttle. I reach about 6mph on my boat, and there is nothing after that, except for an occasional spurt of horsepower (normal top speed was 30mph when it was running ok).

It starts fine, idles fine, moves at slow speeds without dying (i.e. trolling and docking). I have new gas, compression was checked and all of the idle screws and linkage set at an authorized dealer. I also checked all of my fuel lines from the tank to the motor and there were no restrictions.

Any help would be great!!! I'm at my wits end...

-Jason

Check each cylinder for spark. Replace plugs as well. Ignition failures are common.
That engine runs smooth on 2 cylinders which I suspect you're doing.
