Let me first say thanks to you all for taking the time to share all your knowledge on this forum.
40HP Mariner
40ELTO
Serial #6E9 L 502961
Carb. 6E901/CA07
Carb. rebuilt kit part # 17068m
The engine was stalling when put under a load. Rebuilt carb. as first step in trouble shooting. When I pump up the primer bulb fuel pours out of the carb. I don't understand what is going on. I swapped the seat and valve on both carbs and it is still doing the same thing. I put it back together exactly like it came apart. Only thing I can think of is that the parts are not the right ones for this carb. I called to varify the part # for this carb. and it checked out. I am so frustrated. To make things worse I tossed all my original parts. I know better than that!!Never throw away anything until everything is running!!!!!!!!!!. Thanks guys. I hope you have an answer for me. It may be the fuel pump, but I don't think so. What else would keep the fuel from running from the main jet besides the float and needle valve?

I'm not a carb specialist, but.....
Need more history of the problem.
Did it just start flooding on its own?
Did it start flooding after you cleaned the carb?
Do both carbs flood?
Did you adjust the float levels to spec?
Did you replace the floats?
How hard are you squeezing the primer bulb?

Now i´m no Mercman, but are there a possibility you turned tho floaters upsidedown ?

If you pull carbs apart, try to put a plastic hose on fuel inlet and blow through it with your mouth while holding carb upside down. Does the needle valve stop the airflow ? Else something is wrong, check and correct.

Is the fuel coming out of the vent hole at the top of the carb, or is it flooding out elsewhere?
If it's coming out of the vent, I'd bet you need to adjust the primary and / or secondary levers to spec inside the float bowl. Do you have a shop manual for this engine?

Schematic,
I don't know if the carbs leaked when the primed or not, I did not check before I pulled the carbs.

The floats are not adjustable, they are plastic.

Both carbs do the same thing.

I did replace the floats and the needle and seats.

I am squeezing it normal.

Floats will only go in one way, no way to put them in upside down.

I do have shop manual.

I pulled the bowl off and held the float up while I primed the bulb and fuel still coming out of needle and seat even when the float is held up in the full bowl position.

Fuel is coming out of main jet when primed. This can't be normal.

**** Shouldn't the bulb get hard and unable to squeeze? What reduces the fuel pressure into the carb?

Thanks guys you are the best I hope I can return the favor someday.

I too am a far cry from a carb specialist. When you changed the needle, did you have to remove two small metal levers which hold the needle in place? These would be the levers that the float presses on to push the needle up into the seat when the bowl is full. If so, these should be adjusted to spec by bending them. The manual should tell you the measurements. If they are out of spec, they aren't allowing the float to push the needle far enough into the seat to seal.

Found out what my problem was. Went to the parts place today and the mechanic noticed I had left a small button out of the back of the needle valve which was not allowing the float to push up the valve enough. The old needle valve didn't have one of these and the manual didn't show this part,so how was I to know what it was for. Learned a lesson.

Still don't know if rebuilding the carb. has helped my original problem. Will see in a few days.

Thanks for your help.
