1955 merc,need opinions on lower unit grease

Am running a 1955 Mark 25E 18 hp Merc,Original specs. call for Lubriplate in lower unit,I am presently using Mercury Premium Gear Lube in it. What are the opinions here as far as using either lube,I Don,t want to damage the unit by running the wrong lube in it as i now see that its possible to purchase Lubriplate ,that i did,nt know before i started using the merc. gear lube. I got two different answers from two local repair shops here? Thx in advance from an ole Merc Man.

It should be fine using 80-90 gear oil. It's a lot easier to drain any water that might get in with gear oil than try to remove it when mixed with grease.<br /><br />If you still need reasurance check over at.<br /> http://www.pfs-ware.com/kwast/disc_toc.htm

About to begin a restoration of a 1955 25e and ran accross this at: http://www.eastcoastmarineservice.com/faq.html#lube

Says: Q. Can I use regular gear lube in my "Old Merc"?
A. Mercury originally recommended a light grease in all 1961 and older 1, 2, and 4 cylinder models except the 1961 Merc 500. Grease was also recommended in the 1962 Merc 250. We still feel this is the best choice for these older motors. We carry 105 Lubriplate, which is the equivalent, in a 10 oz. tube.
For Mercs newer than this, we carry and recommend Mercury's Premium Gear Lube.

Not sure of oil versus grease reprocussions. Just thought I'd mention it.

Welcome to iboats, but do start repling to old posts you find in the archives. Read them. The post you replied to is a 7 year old post. From 2001.
